Honu History

Our team has operated and restored over 10 DUKW vehicles across the world. These vehicles were delivered to us from New York and put into service here in Hawaii.

DUKWs have an interesting history. Built in the early 1930s. DUKW, also called "ducks" are 2.5-ton six-wheel amphibious truck used in World War II by the U.S. Army and Marine Corps. They were used to carry ammunition, supplies, and equipment from the large supply ships to the smaller fighting units at the beach.

The DUKWs had a special talent that made them vital in WW2 - the duck could swim! These vehicles crossed rivers, ferried stores to other boats, and went to sea. It carried cargo and it carried men. It climbed hills. The only thing it couldn't do was fly! Soldiers regarded the DUKW  as a marvelous vehicle - fun to drive, but critical in assisting their fellow soldiers. These vehicles saved many lives.

80 years later, they are available for our guests to enjoy. Our team has meticulously restored these vehicles for modern comfort and safety standards.  Each pristine vehicle is outfitted with a new engine, steering, brakes and lines. The restoration was completed under the supervision of the United States Coast Guard. The vehicles are now safe for commercial operation in Hawaii. Learn more about our commitment to safety.

There are many sightseeing tours in Waikiki, but none that traverse both land and sea.
